Surin Archipelago

Meet the people of the sea and explore the seabed

A day trip to the Surin Islands from Khao Lak promises a suspended moment. Accompanied by your English-speaking guide, discover this maritime paradise nestled between Thailand and Burma. The Surin Islands National Marine Park, established in 1981, comprises 5 islands. Home to Thailand's largest and most fertile coral reef, this archipelago is considered one of the world's most beautiful dive sites. It evokes peace and tranquility, being a true haven of peace where no construction is allowed. The only inhabitants are whale sharks and manta rays, not to mention the many species of fish and coral. On the program: a snorkeling session to explore the marine life of the Surin Islands with a local guide, dream beaches and an unforgettable encounter with the sea gypsies, nicknamed the Mokens, a timeless community. A visit to the archipelago's two main islands, Surin Neua (to the north) and Surin Tai (to the south), will make for a memorable day.

Morning

Explore the Surin Islands

Board a speedboat from Kuraburi harbor for an hour-long trip to Surin Islands National Park. Your adventure begins with a snorkeling session off the two islands, immediately immersing you in the region’s captivating underwater life.

Meet the Moken: a unique history and way of life

Your journey will then take you to the island inhabited by the Moken, a people of maritime nomads from Southeast Asia who found refuge on the Surin Islands after the 2004 Tsunami. Deeply rooted in animism, they depended mainly on fishing and natural resources for their livelihood. Aboard their boats called kabongs, the Mokens sailed the Andaman Sea for most of the year. During the monsoon season, families would set up temporary villages on beaches as needed. Since the Tsunami, the Moken village of Surin has become permanent, marking a shift to a semi-nomadic or sedentary lifestyle. Explore this fascinating history with our English-speaking guide, discover their unique way of life and meet their endearing children.
